Current practice

Leading the Victorian Government Solicitor's Office, Matthew is the primary source of legal services for the government and public sector agencies, including the Attorney-General and Ministers and Secretaries.

Experience

Matthew is an experienced lawyer and leader across both the public and private sectors.  He joined the Victorian Government Solicitor's Office in 2018 as Assistant Victorian Government Solicitor leading the Litigation and Dispute Resolution Branch. In December 2019, Matthew was appointed Acting Victorian Government Solicitor and commenced as Victorian Government Solicitor in November 2020.

Prior to working in the Victorian Government Solicitor's Office, Matthew held a number of  executive roles at the Transport Accident Commission with a substantial people leadership focus, managing large groups of both lawyers, non-lawyers and multi-disciplinary teams within the Health, Disability and Legal divisions of the TAC.

In addition to his experience in handling disputes sensitively and managing the end-to-end process from claim inception through to litigation strategy, Matthew is passionate about public sector governance and delivering public value through greater efficiency in dispute resolution practices.

Matthew commenced his career in private legal practice in regional Victoria before taking roles in commercial insurance and litigation where he advised a number of corporate entities, insurers and government clients as a Senior Associate.  Before joining the public sector, he spent a number of years in banking and finance, firstly as a Senior Corporate Lawyer and then as a Manager of a large business unit.

Matthew was admitted as a barrister and solicitor of the Supreme Court of Victoria in 2000. He holds a Master of Business Administration from the University of Melbourne (Melbourne Business School) and a Bachelor of Law and a Bachelor of Commerce from Deakin University.
