James has a wide range of experience in Land Acquisition, Planning and Environment Law matters, having acted for clients including landowners, developers, local councils, state government departments, road authorities, state government ministers, statutory bodies and wind energy companies in merits review and judicial review matters.  James has advised clients on matters involving compulsory acquisitions, planning scheme amendments, planning controls and Infrastructure Contributions Plans.

James also has experience advising Commonwealth departments in administrative law and public law matters.  James has acted as a solicitor advocate at the Federal Court, Federal Circuit Court, Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal and the Administrative Appeals Tribunal.

Prior to joining VGSO, James worked for law firms in matters involving planning law, environment law and climate change law.  James has undertaken several courses at the Planning Institute of Australia in relation to statutory planning and planning controls.

Prior to being admitted to practice, James worked as a Judge's Associate to Justice Karin Emerton of the Court of Appeal of Victoria and Justice Rita Incerti of the Supreme Court of Victoria.

During his studies, James was awarded Melbourne Law School's Professor Colin Howard Memorial Prize for Student Published Research.
