Erdem's practice comprises advising government departments and agencies about issues arising under the Charter of Human Rights and Responsibilities Act.

This includes:

  • providing practical assistance to clients so that their decisions, actions, policies and services are informed by robust human rights considerations
  • preparing Statements of Compatibility for new legislation and providing advice during the development of legislation
  • preparing Human Rights Certificates for regulations and other legislative instruments made by government
  • briefing the Attorney-General in litigation matters involving human rights issues
  • representing or assisting State parties in related litigation.

Erdem also advises and represents clients in matters involving questions of statutory interpretation, administrative decision-making, equal opportunity, and privacy and information sharing.

Erdem has experience both at the frontline of human rights work as well as in large scale litigation. Since 2014, Erdem has performed several roles with the United Nations and the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights, most recently providing legal and human rights related advice, operational monitoring and expertise on the mandated activities of the United Nations in Afghanistan and South Sudan. Prior to that, Erdem was a Senior Associate at a major plaintiff law firm, where he worked on several large class action proceedings.

Erdem completed a combined Bachelor of Law and Commerce at Monash University and also holds a Master of Law with First Class Honours from the University of Melbourne.
