More than just a legal adviser

As the primary source of government legal services, our focus is on helping you get the best legal advice possible. So, we need to be more than just a legal adviser to enable you to make the most appropriate legal decisions.

The extent of our role varies from client to client – with some already having established frameworks and simply requiring legal advice on a matter. Others need the VGSO to come in that step earlier and help clarify their legal issues. Additional support is also available through secondments and in-house legal resources for both short and long term.

Adviser

With extensive expertise and experience, we provide advice across many areas of law. This includes whole of government issues, statutory interpretation, and issues requiring a high level of understanding of Victorian Government. We also represent the state in litigation.

Our authoritative advice can lend strength to your decisions.

Navigator

Sourcing the right legal services can be challenging, particularly if the specific nature of your legal issue is unclear. We can help you:

  • clarify and articulate legal issues and needs
  • establish the most effective way to meet those needs – Government Legal Services panel firms, barristers or VGSO itself
  • detail written instructions and monitor service delivery
  • ensure consistent delivery of practical legal advice and outcomes
  • better monitor and manage your legal budget

Supporter

Solve your resource challenges, for large or specialised projects, with immediate in-house legal support, for either short or long term.

With diverse team skills and flexibility, we can help with a particular expertise, or simply as a back up to free up your resources.

We can help implement new legislation or even fill temporary vacancies, such as Acting Corporate Secretary.

Briefing Barristers

As required, and in consultation with clients, we brief Counsel, who are carefully chosen based on the type of work, client requirements and the desired advocacy style.  We also have close working relationships with both the Solicitor-General and Crown Counsel.
